Men's Jeans: The One Piece of Clothing Every Man Owns and Not Everyone Wears Well

Rise: The Detail Most Men Overlook

Wash and Colour

A mid-blue indigo wash is the most versatile — lighter than dark indigo, more formal than a pale or distressed wash, and compatible with the widest range of tops and footwear. Dark indigo washes read more formal and work better in smart-casual contexts. Light washes and heavily distressed jeans sit firmly in casual territory. Black jeans occupy a useful position — they read more formal than blue denim and can cross into smart-casual contexts where blue jeans would look too casual.

Denim Quality

The weight and construction of the denim determines how the jeans wear and age. Mid-weight denim (11–13oz) is the practical standard — heavy enough to have structure and drape well, light enough to wear comfortably year-round. Selvedge denim, woven on narrow shuttle looms with a finished self-edge, is the premium quality marker — denser, more durable, and developing a unique faded patina with wear that mass-produced denim does not replicate. It commands a significant price premium, but a pair of selvedge jeans worn regularly for several years often looks better than a new pair.

Caring for Denim

Denim care is more opinionated than care for most garments. The enthusiast position is to wash as rarely as possible — raw denim in particular develops a patina through wear that frequent washing disrupts, and the fades are shaped by actual use rather than factory processing. Practically speaking, dark indigo jeans should be washed inside out in cold water with a gentle detergent when they genuinely need it, and line-dried rather than tumble-dried to preserve the shape and the dye. Spot cleaning with a damp cloth handles most surface marks without requiring a full wash. Whatever your position on washing frequency, turn them inside out when you do — it significantly reduces surface fading and keeps the colour truer for longer. Never put quality denim in the tumble dryer — the heat shrinks the fabric and breaks down the fibres far faster than air drying, and most jeans fit differently after a hot tumble cycle than they did before.
