Bird baths provide drinking and bathing water — essential year-round but critical in summer (when natural water sources dry up) and winter (when ice covers standing water). A shallow bath with a rough, non-slip surface and a maximum depth of 5–8cm suits the widest range of bird species. Change the water regularly and clean the bath to prevent algae and disease. In winter, place a small ball on the water surface — the wind moves it and prevents the surface freezing solid.

Hedgehog Care

Hedgehog populations have declined dramatically, and gardens are now their primary habitat. A hedgehog house (a simple shelter with an entrance tunnel that deters predators) provides a safe hibernation site and daytime resting place. Position it in a quiet, sheltered corner of the garden, covered with leaves and twigs for insulation and camouflage. A small gap (13cm x 13cm) at the base of garden fences — a "hedgehog highway" — allows hedgehogs to travel between gardens, which is essential for feeding, finding mates, and maintaining viable populations across neighbourhoods.

Supplementary food (specialist hedgehog food or cat biscuits — never bread or milk, which cause digestive problems) and a shallow dish of water support hedgehogs through the seasons when natural food is scarce. Autumn feeding before hibernation is particularly important — hedgehogs need to reach a minimum body weight to survive winter, and a well-stocked feeding station in September and October can make the difference between survival and starvation for underweight juveniles.

Insect Care and Pond Wildlife

Insect hotels — stacked bundles of bamboo canes, drilled wood blocks, and natural materials — provide nesting sites for solitary bees, lacewings, and other beneficial insects. Solitary bees are among the most effective pollinators (significantly more efficient per individual than honeybees) and they're entirely harmless — they don't sting, don't swarm, and don't produce honey. An insect hotel positioned in a sunny, sheltered spot attracts these pollinators to your garden, directly improving the productivity of any flowers, fruit trees, or vegetables you grow.

Garden ponds — even small ones — support an extraordinary range of wildlife: frogs, toads, newts, dragonflies, and the aquatic invertebrates that form the base of the garden food chain. A pond doesn't need to be large or elaborate: a sunken container, a half-barrel, or a small pre-formed liner creates a functional wildlife pond. Include shallow areas with stones or a ramp so wildlife can enter and exit safely, aquatic plants for oxygenation and cover, and avoid fish (which eat the invertebrates and amphibian eggs that make the pond ecologically valuable).
