Cooling: Keeping Your Home Liveable When the Temperature Doesn't Cooperate

British homes were largely designed on the assumption that overheating would never be a serious problem. Thick walls, small windows, no mechanical ventilation — all optimised for keeping heat in, not managing excess of it. For most of the year, that's fine. Then July arrives and suddenly the bedroom is 28°C at midnight, the home office feels like a sauna by eleven, and the idea that any of this was a considered design decision seems genuinely absurd.

Home cooling has become a serious category precisely because UK summers have become hotter and longer in recent years, and because modern homes — particularly well-insulated new builds and extensions with large south-facing glazing — can trap heat in ways that older housing stock doesn't. Fans

A fan doesn't cool the air — it creates movement that makes you feel cooler through convective heat loss and sweat evaporation. That distinction matters: in very high ambient temperatures, moving hot air around is less effective than it sounds. That said, a well-positioned fan combined with sensible window management (open at night when it's cooler outside, closed during the day to keep heat out) produces a genuinely liveable environment in all but the most severe heatwaves.

Tower fans are the most space-efficient for bedrooms and living rooms — slim footprint, wide-arc oscillation, relatively quiet at lower speeds. Pedestal fans move more air at higher speeds and suit larger rooms better. Desk fans are for localised comfort at a workstation. Portable Air Conditioners

A portable air conditioner actually refrigerates the air, extracting heat and humidity and exhausting them outside through a vent hose. They work better than fans in high temperatures — but with caveats. The vent hose must exit through a window or door, meaning a gap that lets some warm air back in. They're noisy, energy-hungry, and cool only the room they're in. For a home office, a bedroom, or any single room that's genuinely uncomfortably hot, a portable unit is a practical and accessible solution without permanent installation. Fixed Split-System Air Conditioning

A split-system air conditioner — wall-mounted indoor unit connected to an outdoor compressor — is the proper long-term solution for reliable, efficient, quiet cooling. Modern inverter-driven split systems are far more energy-efficient than their predecessors and typically cost significantly less to run per hour than a portable unit of equivalent output. Most also provide heating, making them a year-round climate solution rather than a seasonal purchase.

Installation requires a qualified, F-Gas certified refrigeration engineer and involves drilling through an external wall and mounting the outdoor unit — a real installation with a real cost. But for anyone working from home in a warm room every day throughout summer, the quality-of-life return is substantial and the running cost advantage over portable units is ongoing.

Evaporative Coolers

Evaporative coolers pass air through water-saturated pads, cooling it through evaporation. They consume far less energy than refrigerative air conditioning and don't require a vent hose. The significant limitation is humidity — they only work well in dry conditions. In a damp British summer, their effectiveness drops considerably. In a dry, well-ventilated room during a genuine dry heatwave, they can provide useful relief at very low running cost.
