Decorations: The Layer That Turns a House Into Your Home

Furniture gives a room function. Decorations give it personality. The "Does This Spark Joy?" Test

Every decorative object in your home should either be something you genuinely love looking at, something that holds personal meaning, or something that serves a clear aesthetic purpose in the room's overall design. Objects that are "fine" but don't particularly move you, gifts you've kept out of obligation, and impulse purchases that looked great in the shop but don't belong anywhere in your home — all of these dilute the impact of the pieces you actually care about. Edit ruthlessly. A room with ten carefully chosen decorations always looks better than one with fifty random objects competing for attention.

Beautiful rooms don't require enormous budgets. Nature provides free decorations — a branch of blossom in spring, autumn leaves in a bowl, a collection of interesting stones or shells from a beach walk. The most expensive decoration in a room is rarely the most interesting one; the piece with a story behind it almost always is.
